Michigan Criminal Background Information

The Michigan State Police Maintains the Central Repository for Criminal Records in the State
The Michigan State Police (MPS) is responsible for managing the repository of criminal records in the state of Michigan through the Criminal Justice Information Center (CJIC). The MPS also maintains the fingerprints for the state through the system as well.

Fingerprint-based Searches

Fingerprint searches are recommended for any individual or authorized agency who wishes to receive a complete report of a history. Individuals who make fingerprint-based requests can obtain their print at any law enforcement agency in their local area. The fee for fingerprinting is $30, with processing for the criminal records request taking about a month's time.

Accessing Information Online through ICHAT

You can also conduct an online search, using, at least, the subject's name and birth date through ICHAT , or the Internet Criminal History Access Tool. The charge for using this service is $10.00 per name searched.

Who can Access Criminal Histories?

Complete criminal history reports can be viewed by individuals requesting their own criminal history, authorized agencies and employers, and law enforcement entities. The public is allowed access to third-party criminal records as well. However, such reports will only show arrests that resulted in a conviction.

Accessing Search Links on the Michigan State Police (MSP) Website

To begin your search, you'll want to visit the online services section of the Michigan State Police (MPS) website. That's where you can find and access the links for the sex offender registry and the Internet Criminal History app, also known as ICHAT. ICHAT can be accessed by the public for the aforementioned nominal fee of $10. Payment can be made online with a Visa, MasterCard or Discover credit card, or by using a debit card.

Obtaining the Results of an ICHAT Search: What will and won't be Disclosed

The ICHAT database contains updated information concerning misdemeanor and felony convictions. In some cases, misdemeanor or local ordinance violations do not have to be reported and therefore will not show up in a search. ICHAT will not disclose any information on court cases that did not result in a conviction either.

Inmate Information can be Found at the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) Website

If you are seeking information about an inmate, then you'll need to refer to the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) website. The MDOC is responsible for the operation and administration of 22 correctional facilities in Michigan.

Search by an Inmate's I.D. or by his Name and Age

Anyone seeking information about an inmate can find the information by accessing the MDOC's computerized database called OTIS -- an acronym for the MDOC's Offender Tracking Information System. In order to facilitate a search, you'll need to input the inmate's MDOC ID or his name and one or more identifiers, such as his age or gender.

What Inmate Records Include

Records for inmates in the Michigan correctional system include biographical details, physical descriptors, such as tattoos, conviction information and tentative release dates. A photo is provided in the file as well.
