Search Limited Criminal History Information by Going through the Indiana State Police Website
In order to perform a criminal records search in Indiana, you first have to go through the Indiana State Police (ISP) as the agency oversees the maintenance of criminal histories through the state's central repository. The ISP offers a way to request limited criminal history data online, thereby making retrieval faster and easier than by requesting the record by mail.
What You'll Have to Pay
If you want to obtain several histories, then you can register for the service at the ISP website by paying $15 for each name-based search. If you don't have a subscription, then you'll need to pay $16.32 for each name searched. The fees can be paid online by credit card. You can also download a form which you can send in by mail. Mailed requests for limited criminal record searches cost $7 per name or $10 if the requester is an individual requesting is complete history.

Records that are Available to the Public
The types of criminal records that are available for public viewing in Indiana are histories that include class A misdemeanors or felony arrests. Other records, which are more complete in nature, are provided to authorized employers, law enforcement agencies, or individuals who want to access their own criminal record.

Some of the Reasons for Searches
In Indiana, people may perform a criminal records search for a number of reasons, such as checking on the criminal backgrounds of individuals living in their neighborhood or screening employment candidates.

The Database of Records
The Indiana State Police provides criminal records that include all arrests that resulted in felony and misdemeanor convictions from the previous year as well as records for arrests and dispositions that date back further in time. Because arrest records have been maintained since the 30s, the records repository in Indiana is quite extensive. Criminal histories contain arrest information and judicial proceedings.

The IDOC -- The Central Repository for Inmate Information
The Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) is dedicated to keeping the public safe by making sure that offenders who are released receive the appropriate rehabilitation in order to function and live in the mainstream and society. In order to look up inmates in the state, you must access the IDOC database on the Internet at the IDOC website. The Sex and Violent Offender Registry can also be accessed through the website.

Search for Inmate Information Online at the IDOC Website
You can search inmate information by inserting the IDOC ID number for the subject or by using his or her last name. The Offender Public Information Search on the IDOC website makes it easy for you to obtain the information you need.

Victims of Crimes can Register with SAVIN to Obtain an Inmate's Status
If you are a victim of a crime, then you can subscribe to SAVIN or the Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system, which is available through the IDOC site. Crime victims, through SAVIN, can obtain release or transfer information about an offender and other current data. Victims of crimes can also obtain offender information by phone.

What Inmate Records Contain
